Ayurveda’s Key to a Healthy Life!

By now we have clearly understood that Ayurveda is a completely natural science. It believes that we will be able to lead a healthy and happy life, if we are able to synchronize our lives with the rhythms of the nature.

Ayurveda says that all living and non-living beings are made up of the same Five Elements – Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space, and the same three Energies – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Everything that is made by nature has the same material and energy. So, technically, we are all the same.

Nature works in a certain rhythmic fashion. There is day and night, the six seasons follow a certain rhythm, the rotation and revolution of Earth follows a certain pattern and so on and so forth. And since we are nature too, our body understands these natural rhythms very well. As long as we follow these rhythms, we are in a state of health. The moment we deviate from this path… that is when diseases affect us.

To explain this in simple terms, there is a time that we automatically wake up in the morning. The moment the Sun rises, our body tells us that it is time to wake up, freshen up and perform our daily duties. Likewise, by the time it is night, our body automatically gives us indications that it is time to sleep.

So, our bodies are made in such a way that we follow the natural clock. But when we lead lifestyles that are averse to the natural rhythms… that is when our body is not able to cope with the changes, and that in turn, results in the onslaught of diseases.

Ayurveda firmly believes that we need to balance our lives in such a way that it does not disrupt the natural cycles or rhythms. Because every time we disrupt these rhythms, our body finds itself in an unnatural state and becomes prone to imbalances or diseases.

Also, moderation is the key! Too much or too little of anything could be dangerous. Too little sugar will make the body weak as sugar is needed for building our body tissues, organs etc. But at the same time, too much of sugar could lead to diabetes. So, at all times, we need to maintain a healthy balance.

We need to get our basics right to lead a healthy and happy life.

For example:

1. We should try and hit the bed latest by 10 P.M. as 6 to 10 in the evening is the Kapha time. That is when our body feels heavy and winds down. If we miss this time, then what follows next is the Pitta time or the time of intense activity… and it would be extremely difficult for us to sleep at this time, resulting in insomnia.

2. We should have the heaviest meal of the day at noon or before 2 P.M. as that is the Pitta time, when the Sun is at its strongest. Since the Fire Element is at its best at this time, we will be able to digest our food properly.

3. Likewise, we should always exercise at the Vata time as Vata governs movement of the body organs, muscles, joints etc and helps us in flexibility.

So, following the natural rhythms and synchronizing our body with the cycles of the nature is extremely important for us to lead a healthy life. It is paramount for us to maintain the balance or harmony. Else, diseases could come knocking.

Stay tuned to this space, as up next we will talk about the Ayurvedic Dinacharya, which if followed religiously, could keep diseases at bay.
